Your Family Can Be Your Bushel
A candle burning bright behind fogged glass — a picture of light kept in, when even family, a good gift from God, can become the bushel that keeps it from shining outward.

"Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house" (Matthew 5:15).

Every excuse for hiding your light sounds reasonable at first. Work. A busy season. A closet, a basement, a back porch where nobody sees. But there's one bushel that catches people off guard, and it's the one that sounds the most spiritual: family.

We take family seriously here. Fathers training up children. Wives loving their homes. Time together outside of church activities. All of that is right and good. But good things make the best excuses. It's easy to say "I'm just focused on my family right now" and let that cover for years of silence toward the lost neighbor next door and the light that never makes it past your own front porch.

Here's the test. If your family keeps you from shining outward instead of sending you out, you've made an idol out of a good gift. A candle under a bushel doesn't stop burning. It just stops helping anybody but the people already inside.

Love your family hard. Raise your children right. Just don't let your home become the reason nobody outside it ever hears about Jesus.
