You Were Never Meant to Be a Fountain

There's a difference between a faucet and a fountain.

A faucet needs pipes. It needs pressure built up somewhere else. It needs a source it doesn't have in itself. Cut the line, and the faucet's got nothing to give. It just sits there, dry, useless — waiting on somebody else.

A fountain doesn't wait on anybody. A fountain is the source.

That's the difference between Jesus Christ and every other thing you've ever leaned on. He doesn't channel life from somewhere else. He is life. "For as the Father hath life in himself, so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself" (John 5:26). Not borrowed. Not delegated. Not topped off from a tank somewhere. Built in.

A lot of us are trying to live like fountains when God only ever built us to be faucets. We run ourselves dry trying to be the source for our own marriage, our own peace, our own strength for the day. We act like we're not allowed to run empty. We act embarrassed when we do.

You were never supposed to be the source. You were made to stay connected to one.

Quit acting shocked when you're dry. You're a faucet. Go back to the fountain. Sit under the preaching. Get in the word. Stop pretending you can manufacture what only He supplies. "For with thee is the fountain of life" (Psalm 36:9), not with you.

He's not asking you to be impressive. He's asking you to stay connected.

If this is you today, don't sit on it. Send it to somebody else who's been trying to run on empty.
