You Can Call Jesus Lord and Still Put Something First
Luke 9 puts three men on the road with Jesus. Two of them said "Lord" and then added a "first."
One said, "Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father" (Luke 9:59). The other said, "Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house" (Luke 9:61).
Both men said yes and then put something ahead of it. That's how it goes with most of us. Nobody stands up and refuses the Lord. We'll get serious once the hay is in. We're in the pew on Sunday morning. Sunday night went first because the day was long, and the midweek service went after that, and we call all of it being reasonable.
Jesus answered the second man plainly: "No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God" (Luke 9:62).
Most of us have a "first" we haven't told the Lord about.
