You Can Be Right About God and Still Not Know Him

Jesus said to the Pharisees in John 8:19, “Ye neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also.”

He said it to trained men whose whole standing in Israel rested on knowing God. They had the scrolls memorized and prayed at dawn, and they wore Scripture on their foreheads and wrists. Jesus told them in the treasury, in front of everybody, that they didn’t know Him at all.

Their trouble was relational. They had plenty of information about God and wanted nothing to do with His Son when He stood in front of them.

That ought to make a Bible-believing church stop and look. We can have the right Bible version and the right conservative songs on Sunday morning and still not know Him. It isn’t wrong to be right, but rightness turns to pride when we use it to be better than somebody, and a man can use it to miss the people God put in front of him.

Look at how you treat the brother or sister who doesn’t see everything the way you do. How we deal with people says a lot about the heart. If those Pharisees had known Christ, they would never have treated Him the way they did.

Do you know Him?
