Why Christians Are Afraid to Share the Gospel (And How to Fix It)

The Painful Truth About Christian Fear
Here's a question that might sting: When did you last boldly tell someone that Jesus Christ died for their sins?
Not invite them to church. Not talk about fishing or sports. Actually share the Gospel.
If you're squirming right now, you're not alone. Countless Christians today retreat, cower back, and wind back from sharing the most powerful message in the world. Yet before we got saved, we weren't ashamed to sin. Nobody forced us - we voluntarily signed up for that hot mess.
So why do we get saved and suddenly become timid about the very thing that transformed our lives?
Paul's Bold Declaration That Changes Everything
In Romans 1:16, the Apostle Paul makes a declaration that should revolutionize every Christian's approach to sharing faith:
"For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek."
Paul wasn't talking about taking Dale Carnegie courses on "How to Win Friends and Influence People." That's not where the power is. The power of salvation lies in the Gospel itself.
The Real Reason You Struggle with Evangelism
We tend to shy away from Gospel conversations: "Hey, let's talk about sports! Let's talk about vacation!" All those things are fine for fellowship, but we've got something that's actually powerful - the Gospel. Don't be ashamed of it, and don't think your personal persuasion or wisdom is going to do the real work.
The truth is this: Our nature leads us to discuss everything except the Gospel, and when we do this, we short-circuit the current that could run through us into someone else.
As 1 Corinthians 1:18 tells us: "For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God."
It's Not About You - It's About God's Power
Here's what you need to understand: All these little "g" gods died and stayed dead. Muhammad didn't raise himself. None of these false gods raised themselves. But our God did! That's real power.
God doesn't care about your intellect or wisdom. As 1 Corinthians 1:21 says: "For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe."
The power isn't in your charisma - there's no power in that. There's power in the Gospel, and that's what we proclaim.
Stop Looking for "Respectable Christianity"
You know what people want today? Respectable Christianity. Beautiful buildings, activities, bounce houses - anything to avoid actually talking about Christ. We put the cart before the horse, looking for respectable Christianity instead of looking for Christ.
But we shouldn't be doing things to avoid talking about Christ - we should be doing them to bring Christ in as the light.
The Stakes Are Higher Than You Think
Matthew 10:28 reminds us: "And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell."
Your body's going to die - old age might get you, sickness might get you. But God Almighty has the power to cast somebody into hell, and nobody else does. So stop being afraid of temporary embarrassment when eternal souls are at stake.
Are You Telling Someone About Jesus?
The Gospel is "to every one that believeth" - not everyone that was baptized, not everyone that did enough good works, but everyone that believeth.
As Romans 3:22 tells us: "Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference."
It doesn't matter if you're Baptist, Catholic, Protestant - have you trusted the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior? And if you have, are you telling others about Him?
The Bottom Line
The world around us is full of spiritually dead people who desperately need what we have. When you look in their eyes, it's dead - it gives you a corpse-like chill. They need the regenerating life of the Holy Spirit through Jesus Christ.
But that's not what we have as believers. We've got true saints of God, folks who want to live by faith, folks who have put their faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. We know we're pilgrims passing through - this isn't our home.
So why not get your eyes off your future mansion and try to get some more people to come to the mansion party you're going to have in heaven? If you tell them about Jesus Christ, that's exactly what you'll be doing.
The Gospel isn't something to be ashamed of - it's the power of God unto salvation. Don't let fear rob you of the joy of seeing God transform lives through His Word.
