Where Did Music Come From?

Music Started in Heaven, Not on Earth
Ever wonder where music actually came from? Most people think it developed from human culture, but the Bible reveals a shocking truth: music existed before humanity.
In Job 38:4-7, God takes Job back to creation itself: "Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth... When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?"
Before Adam and Eve existed, angelic beings were already singing praises as God created the world. Music was happening in heaven first.
The Choir Director Who Fell From Grace
Here's where it gets interesting. Ezekiel 28:13 describes Satan before his fall: "The workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created."
Lucifer was likely heaven's main choir director, created with built-in instruments—percussion (tabrets) and wind instruments (pipes). But pride corrupted him. Instead of using music to worship God, he turned it toward self-worship and drew others to follow him.
This reveals the key difference: Worldly music centers on self (making you feel good), while godly music centers on God (bringing Him glory).
The First Human Songs Were About Salvation
The first recorded human song appears in Exodus 15:1-2 after God saved Israel through the Red Sea: "Then sang Moses and the children of Israel this song unto the Lord... The Lord is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation."
When God saves people—physically or spiritually—the natural response is singing. Luke 15:24-25 shows the same pattern when the prodigal son returns: "For this my son was dead, and is alive again... And they began to be merry... he heard musick and dancing."
4 Biblical Principles for Your Music Choices
1. Check Who Gets the Glory
Ask yourself: Does this music point me toward God or toward myself? Music that constantly focuses on your feelings, your problems, or your desires without pointing to God falls into Satan's corrupted pattern.
2. Sing With Grace in Your Heart
Colossians 3:16 commands: "Singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord." What's in your heart comes out in your music—and your music teaches others what's really in your heart.
3. Make It Skillful and Passionate
Psalm 33:3 says: "Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise." God deserves our best effort, and we shouldn't be ashamed to worship Him passionately.
4. Remember the Purpose
The book of Psalms is entirely about music and worship. From creation to eternity, music's purpose is praising God for His works and salvation.
Music Will Be Restored
Even though Satan corrupted his musical gifts, God will restore music to its proper place. Revelation 5:9 shows the future: "And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy... for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood."
The Bottom Line
Music is God's gift, corrupted by Satan's pride, but ultimately restored for God's glory. When choosing music, ask: Does this magnify God or magnify self?
Your answer reveals whether you're following heaven's original pattern or Satan's corrupted version.
