The Pride That Destroys: Why Human Wisdom Always Fails

You're Not As Smart As You Think You Are
Every generation thinks it's smarter than the last. We've got smartphones, space travel, and gene therapy. Yet divorce rates soar, the depression epidemic rages, and society fractures more each day.
Why? Because there's a fatal flaw in human wisdom that nobody wants to admit.
The Diagnosis Nobody Wants to Hear
"Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools" (Romans 1:22).
Seven words that explain everything wrong with our world.
Look around you. You see a fence—you ask who built it. You see a Corvette—you admire the engineer. You see a garden—you praise the gardener.
But show someone the intricate design of DNA, the perfect distance of Earth from the sun, the miracle of human consciousness—and suddenly they declare: "Random chance! No designer needed!"
That's not intelligence. That's willful blindness driven by pride.
Three Kinds of Fools
1. The Original Fools
Adam and Eve had paradise. They wanted wisdom. They traded everything for a lie and plunged humanity into death. "And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof" (Genesis 3:6).
2. The Educated Fools
Freud called religion a neurosis. Darwin said you're evolved slime. Modern professors teach your children they're meaningless accidents. Yet God declares: "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction" (Proverbs 1:7).
3. The Religious Fools
Preachers who talk about love but never mention sin. Churches offering self-help instead of salvation. They promise to make you a "better you" when you don't need improvement—you need resurrection.
The Terrifying Truth
Three times in Romans 1, we read: "God gave them up."
When you persistently reject God, He eventually gives you what you want—life without Him. And that's not freedom. That's hell on earth, leading to hell forever.
The Only Way Out
Stop professing yourself to be wise.
You're not basically good. You're not evolving upward. You're not your own god.
"But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8).
You're a criminal before a holy God. The evidence is overwhelming. The sentence is death. But the Judge offers complete pardon through Jesus Christ—not because you deserve it, but because He paid your debt.
That's grace. But you can't receive it while you're still professing yourself to be wise.
The choice is yours: continue in pride toward destruction, or humble yourself and live.
