Stop Arguing with the Bread of Life

Stop Arguing with the Bread of Life

There's a moment in John 6 where the Jews start arguing with each other about how Jesus could give them His flesh to eat. They're not asking Him. They're not seeking Him. They're bickering among themselves while the Bread of Life is standing right there in the room.

I read that and thought about how many of us do the same thing every week.

We sit down at a table loaded with the Word of God — full, spread out, more than enough — and instead of eating, we argue about the ingredients. Who wrote this book? What translation is this? Is this doctrine fashionable enough? We turn feasting into fighting. Communion into controversy. And the whole time, Jesus is sitting right there, offering Himself to us, while we're too busy striving to actually receive Him.

The devil doesn't need to steal your Bible. He just needs to get you arguing about it long enough that you never eat.

Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God (Deuteronomy 8:3). Not opinions about the word. Not debates about the word. The word itself — taken in, chewed on, digested into your soul.

So ask yourself, at your own table, in your own quiet time: are you feasting, or are you fighting? Drawing near to Christ, or circling Him with your arms crossed?

Stop striving. Start eating. He's still the Bread of Life, and the table is still full.

This post barely scratches the surface of what's on the table. If you want the full meal, listen to the sermon right here:
