Jesus Didn’t Stop at “Go”

Jesus Didn’t Stop at “Go”

Plenty of folks read John 8:11 as if it ends early: “Neither do I condemn thee: go.”

Look at it again in your King James: “Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.” There’s a comma after “go.” The sentence keeps running.

Just minutes before, men had dragged that woman into the temple to end her life. Every one of them walked out, because the law had their names on it too. Jesus was the only one left in the room with a case against her, and He closed it. He could have condemned her and chose not to, and that mercy was headed for a cross.

Then He gave her a future. A pass on her sin would have sent her right back to where she stood that morning, and nobody would call that kindness.

I’m convinced this is where a lot of us have grace wrong. The standard didn’t go anywhere. Jesus stands in it, and He lives in the heart of the one who believes.

If you’ve raised kids, you know how this works. When your boy heads out on a Friday afternoon, you don’t just say “go.” You say go and be careful, go and stay out of trouble. That’s how Jesus talks to you once He saves you. If He has made you clean, He means for you to live clean.

The sentence keeps running, and so does the message. Listen to it here:
