It Doesn’t Matter Where a Thing Started

Nobody ever made a holier piece of brass than Moses did. God told him to make it, and God used it to heal a dying people in the wilderness. Jesus pointed back to it Himself.

Then Hezekiah broke it. 2 Kings 18:4 says he “brake in pieces the brasen serpent that Moses had made: for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it: and he called it Nehushtan.” That word means a piece of brass. Seven hundred years of history, and he called it what it was.

Some of you would be upset. If you had made that serpent with your own hands, and somebody called it just a piece of brass, you’d be insulted. But it doesn’t matter where a thing started. What matters is what’s burning in front of it now.

That’s worth remembering this Saturday. You’ll hear that Halloween began as a church holiday, and that a trunk-or-treat in the church parking lot is a church event. Say all of that is true. Then go out Saturday night and see if you can find one prayer meeting.

Settle it before the plate is in front of you. “But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank.”

The full message from Daniel 1, “Purposed in His Heart,” is below. Come hear how a boy settled it before the table was set.
