Head Coverings: What Scripture Actually Says

The Confusion Ends Here
Churches have turned 1 Corinthians 11 into everything from legalistic rules to complete neglect. Some forbid women from joining without head coverings. Others ignore the passage entirely. But what does Scripture actually say when we let the Bible interpret itself?
The Bible Defines the Covering
1 Corinthians 11:4 - "Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head."
Notice two different "heads" - the man's physical head and his spiritual head (Christ). But what is this covering?
1 Corinthians 11:14-15 - "Doth not even nature itself teach you, that if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him? But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering."
The hair IS the covering. Verse 15 explicitly states, "her hair is given her for a covering."
The Pattern is Clear
- Men: Long hair = shame (dishonoring covering)
- Women: Long hair = glory (honoring covering)
- The covering: Defined as hair in verse 15
This aligns with nature itself, as Paul argues. God designed men and women with natural distinctions that reflect spiritual authority.
What About Old Testament Examples?
Esther 6:12 and 2 Samuel 15:30 show men with covered heads, but always in contexts of mourning or grief - not worship requirements. Jeremiah 14:3-4 describes covering heads in shame during judgment.
These are descriptive passages about cultural mourning practices, not prescriptive New Testament church doctrine.
The Freedom Scripture Provides
For women: Your long hair is your covering and glory. No need to run home for a prayer scarf.
For men: Short hair maintains biblical distinction. A work hat while praying doesn't dishonor Christ.
For churches: Don't bind people with requirements God never gave.
Cultural vs. Biblical
Respect cultural manners - if someone asks you to remove your hat in their home, honor that request. But don't confuse Western etiquette with biblical doctrine.
If a woman chooses additional covering because she believes it honors God, that's between her and her husband. If she doesn't wear additional covering because she understands hair is the biblical covering, don't bind her with man-made rules.
The Heart of the Matter
This passage teaches:
- God's design for male/female distinctions
- Spiritual authority and headship principles
- Honor given to God through understanding His Word
Getting caught up in externals while missing these truths misses the point entirely.
Bottom Line
God isn't trying to confuse us. Hair is the covering according to 1 Corinthians 11:15. The principles of authority, honor, and biblical distinction between men and women remain vital - but stop adding burdens God never gave.
Trust Scripture's clarity and walk in Christ's freedom.
