God's Hidden Plan: Why Esther Was Chosen as Queen
The Shocking Selection of an Unlikely Queen
When King Ahasuerus needed a new queen, he could have chosen any woman in his vast empire. Yet God orchestrated events so that a Jewish orphan named Esther would wear the crown. But why her? What made this young woman so special in God's eyes?
Esther 2:17 tells us: "And the king loved Esther above all the women, and she obtained grace and favour in his sight more than all the virgins: so that he set the royal crown upon her head, and made her queen instead of Vashti."
Four Character Qualities That Set Esther Apart
1. Contentment Over Ambition
Esther 2:15 shows us that "she required nothing" beyond what was given. Esther wasn't seeking a crown out of selfish ambition. Proverbs 19:23 teaches: "The fear of the Lord tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied."
2. Humble Obedience
Even after becoming queen, Esther 2:20 tells us: "Esther had not yet shewed her kindred nor her people; as Mordecai had charged her: for Esther did the commandment of Mordecai, like as when she was brought up with him."
3. Modest Character
Proverbs 31:30 declares: "Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised." While beautiful, Esther didn't rely on manipulation or worldly methods.
4. Faithful Trust
Esther accepted God's will with the peace described in Philippians 4:7: "And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."
The Deeper Purpose: God's Sovereignty
Esther's selection wasn't random—it was part of God's master plan to save His people. Just as the 144,000 witnesses in Revelation 7:4 and Revelation 14:1 are sealed and protected for God's purposes, Esther likewise was positioned "for such a time as this."
Your Spiritual Freedom
Like the release King Ahasuerus declared for his provinces during Esther's feast, believers have been released from sin's bondage. Romans 6:18 declares: "Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness."
John 8:36 promises: "If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed."
Apply Esther's Example Today
God chose Esther because she possessed:
- Contentment with His will
- Humble obedience to authority
- Modest character that feared the Lord
- Faithful trust in His timing
When elevated to any position, remember Esther's example: carry yourself with grace, don't forget where you came from, and remain obedient to God's calling.
God positions His people strategically throughout history. Like Esther, you may be exactly where you need to be for His purposes to unfold.
