Do You Give God Your Leftovers?

Do You Give God Your Leftovers?

The Question That Changes Everything

People wake up early for work. Stay late for the bonus. Dress sharp for their boss. Give 110% when there's competition.

But God? He gets our tired Sunday morning hour—if we're not too exhausted.

"I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service." (Romans 12:1)

Reasonable service. Not extraordinary. Not superhuman. Reasonable.

The Cain Complex

Both Cain and Abel brought offerings to God. Both took time from their day. Both wanted God's acceptance.

But Abel "brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering" (Genesis 4:4).

Abel brought his best. First choice. Carefully selected.

Cain? He brought some fruit. Whatever was handy. The leftovers.

Sound familiar?

Here's What We Really Give God

  • Our leftover energy (after work drains us dry)
  • Our leftover money (after hobbies and investments)
  • Our leftover attention (after scrolling for hours)
  • Our leftover time (if nothing better comes up)

Athletes train at 4 AM. Sacrifice their diet. Skip parties. Push through pain. All for a trophy that'll tarnish.

Yet Jesus Christ died on a cross for us, and most Christians can't make it to their local church's midweek service.

The Patience Problem Nobody Wants to Admit

"To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life" (Romans 2:7)

Important things require patience. But we're terrified of anything that takes time.

  • Church takes time
  • Prayer takes time
  • Reading the Bible takes time
  • Witnessing takes time
  • Building godly relationships takes time

So we created quick-fix Christianity. Drive-thru salvation. Microwave sanctification.

Meanwhile, many American's will spend two years planning their retirement portfolio.

What Are We Actually Seeking?

Whatever we seek, we'll find.

Look for trouble? We'll find it. Look for excuses? They're everywhere. Look for sin? It multiplies like compound interest.

But seek God? "And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart" (Jeremiah 29:13).

Not with your leftover heart. Not with your spare heart. All your heart.

The Bottom Line

Stop treating the Lord like you treat the clearance rack—only interested when everything else is picked over.

People have time for what you value. People have energy for what matters to you. You have money for what you prioritize.

The question isn't whether God will accept your offering.

The question is whether you'll ever offer Him anything worth accepting.
