Daniel 9 Prophecy: The Truth About Israel vs. The Church

The Prophecy That Changes Everything About End Times
Are you reading Daniel 9 wrong? Most Christians are - and it's costing them a clear understanding of God's prophetic timeline.
When the angel Gabriel appeared to Daniel, he delivered one of the most precise prophecies in Scripture. But here's what might shock you: it has nothing to do with the church.
"Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city..." (Daniel 9:24)
Notice, Gabriel didn't say "seventy weeks for Christians" or "for the church." He said thy people - Daniel's people, the Israelites.
The Six Purposes in Daniel 9:24 that Prove it isn't about New Testament Christians
Gabriel outlined six specific goals for these 70 weeks, and every single one proves this prophecy is Israel-focused:
1. To finish the transgression - Daniel 9:24
Jesus said, "It is finished" on the cross for us. The transgressions of saved people are done. But Israel's national transgression? That's future - when they turn to God as a nation.
2. To make an end of sins - Daniel 9:24
1 Peter 2:24 tells us: "Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness." The Christian's sins are handled. Israel's national sins await their coming King.
3. To make reconciliation for iniquity - Daniel 9:24
2 Corinthians 5:19 says saved people have already been reconciled: "God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them." We don't need Daniel 9, but Israel does.
4. To bring in everlasting righteousness - Daniel 9:24
We already have everlasting life through Christ. This is about Israel's future kingdom.
5. To seal up vision and prophecy - Daniel 9:24
We're already sealed by the Holy Spirit (2 Corinthians 1:22). This sealing is specifically about Israel's prophetic timeline.
6. To anoint the most holy - Daniel 9:24
This is King Jesus returning to sit on David's throne in Jerusalem - not the church age.
The Missing Week That Explains Everything
Here's where it gets exciting. Daniel's prophecy breaks down like this:
- 69 weeks fulfilled - From the decree to rebuild Jerusalem to Christ's crucifixion
- 1 week remaining - The future tribulation period
What's happening now? God stopped the prophetic clock. We're in a gap - the church age - between the 69th and 70th week.
"And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself..." (Daniel 9:26)
That's the crucifixion, perfectly timed according to God's prophetic schedule.
Why This Truth Matters for Your Faith Today
Understanding that Daniel 9 is for Israel, not the church, transforms how you read end times prophecy. It clears up the confusion between:
- What God promises the church (our inheritance)
- What God promises Israel (their kingdom)
- When each happens in God's timeline
When someone needs Christ - Jewish, Gentile, anyone - you don't bring them to Daniel 9. You bring them to the cross where "whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16).
But Daniel 9 shows us God's faithfulness to His promises. If He keeps His word to Israel with such precision, imagine how secure our promises are in Christ.
The Kingdom Is Coming
Daniel 7:14 gives us the thrilling conclusion: "And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed."
That's the kingdom Daniel 9 points toward. Not a spiritual kingdom we're in now, but the literal, physical reign of King Jesus when He returns.
