Created in God's Image: Identity in a World of Digital Distraction

"So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them." - Genesis 1:27
The Biblical Foundation of Human Identity
In the beginning, God established a fundamental truth about humanity that defines our very existence: we are created in His image. This profound reality from Genesis 1:26-27 provides the foundation for understanding:
- Human dignity and worth
- Our purpose in creation
- Gender as divinely designed
- Our relationship with our Creator
When we understand that we bear God's image, it transforms how we view ourselves and others. This isn't just theological theory—it's the bedrock of Christian identity.
The Modern Identity Crisis
Despite this clear biblical teaching, the American family is facing bombardment by images and identity confusion. Consider how our perception of self has shifted:
- From magazine imagery to digital billboards
- From occasional media exposure to constant connection
- From biblical identity to socially-constructed identities
We've got TikTok, we've got Facebook, we've got Instagram, we've got Snapchat, we've got YouTube, we've got all of these things that constantly are putting visual imagery in front of us.
This constant visual input shapes how we see ourselves and what we believe about our identity.
The Scroll Doctrine
One of the most powerful metaphors is how many modern Christians have replaced biblical doctrine with what could be called "scroll doctrine"—beliefs formed by endlessly scrolling through social media:
"Our doctrinal statement isn't what is on our local Church's doctrinal statement. Our doctrinal statement is what's on our phone when we open it up, and start scrolling. Practically, that's what we believe, and it's all powered with visual imagery."
This digital consumption cycle has profound spiritual implications:
- It replaces Scripture with social influence
- It prioritizes rapidly changing cultural views over timeless biblical truth
- It shapes our identity around comparison rather than creation
- It fragments our attention and diminishes our capacity for deep spiritual reflection
The Truth About Gender Identity
One of the most contested areas of identity by modern, sinful culture is gender. While cultural messages promote fluid gender identities, Genesis presents a clear understanding of only 2 genders:
"Male and female created he them..."
This biblical framework teaches that:
- God creates each person as either male or female
- Gender is assigned by God, not self-determined
- Our identity is fundamentally tied to how God created us
- True fulfillment comes through embracing God's design
Escaping the Self-Expression Trap
Our culture promotes a journey of "self-love" and "self-expression," but this path leads to rebellion against our Creator. True identity isn't found in self-discovery, but in aligning with God's purpose:
The journey of self-love and self-expression is a lie of the devil. When people take that path they're actually on a journey of rebellion against their Creator God, who loved them enough to create, assign and identify them the way He saw fit.
Instead of seeking self-defined identity, Christians are called to:
- Embrace God's design and purpose
- Express themselves in ways that reflect God's image
- Find fulfillment through obedience rather than autonomy
- Reject cultural pressure to reinvent themselves
Reclaiming Image-Bearer Identity
To live authentically as image-bearers in a digital age:
- Limit digital consumption that promotes unbiblical identity concepts
- Study Scripture daily to ground your identity in God's truth
- Create tech boundaries to prevent constant visual bombardment
- Practice discernment when consuming media and social content
- Build authentic community with other believers who affirm biblical identity
Remember, we are not defined by our screens, our preferences, or cultural trends. We are defined by our Creator, who lovingly formed us in His image and designed us with purpose.
How has digital media influenced your understanding of identity? What steps can you take to ground your identity more firmly in Scripture?
