Biblical Witnessing vs Soul Winning: What's the Difference?
The Creator Who Became a Curse
Most Christians don't understand the difference between witnessing and soul winning - and this confusion may be creating false converts.
Think about this profound contrast: God spoke the entire universe into existence without effort. "For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast" (Psalm 33:9). Creation cost God nothing - it was simply His glory on display.
But salvation? That cost Him everything.
2 Corinthians 5:21 declares: "For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him." The Creator who can speak worlds into existence became sin for you and me.
Galatians 3:13 adds: "Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree."
Jesus Christ - equal with God - "made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant" (Philippians 2:7). The highest became the lowest.
We're Witnesses, Not Soul Winners
Here's where many Christians get evangelism backwards. Romans 12:1 calls us to "present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God." But this doesn't mean we win souls - it means we witness for the One who does.
The Critical Distinction
Proverbs 11:30 says "he that winneth souls is wise," but Acts 1:8 reveals our true role: "Ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth."
We don't win souls - God does. We are only His witnesses.
1 Corinthians 3:9 confirms this: "For we are labourers together with God." We get to work with Him, but He does the saving.
Taking the Witness Stand
When a witness takes the courtroom stand, they present evidence. And that's our job:
- Evidence against the sinner: "Have you ever lied? Lusted? Had idols? You're guilty before God."
- Evidence for the sinner: Jesus said: 'I am the way, the truth, and the life' and "The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."
We present truth. The Holy Spirit convicts. The only wise God wins the soul.
Avoiding Easy Believism
This distinction matters because when if we think we must "win" souls, we'll create false conversions. We'll end up getting people to "repeat prayers" or "say words" without true Holy Spirit conviction.
I want everyone saved, but not through false conversions. Our job is not to play the Holy Spirit - we're simply His witnesses presenting Gospel truth.
The Urgency of Biblical Witnessing
Fifty years ago, most people feared God and believed He existed. Today, you can knock on 50 doors and find Muslims, atheists, Buddhists, Satanists, and beliefs you've never heard of.
But Romans 10:12-13 still applies: "For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."
Purple hair, tattoos, foul language - doesn't matter. Give them the Gospel because "whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."
How Faith Comes
Romans 10:14-15 asks the critical questions: "How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent?"
Just last week, I met someone who'd never read John 3:16. There are people who don't know "For God so loved the world." That's why we must bring the Gospel to them.
Romans 10:17 gives us a simple method: "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."
The Bottom Line
Don't try to win souls - be sent by the Lord as His witness. Present the Word of God, and let the Holy Spirit do the convicting. The Lord will do the winning; we get to play a part as His witnesses.
The highest became the lowest so we could work for Him. He does the saving - let's be thankful we are His witnesses.
