Biblical Governance: Understanding True Christian Leadership in America

Biblical Governance: Understanding True Christian Leadership in America
Biblical governance begins at home, not in politics. True Christian leadership follows Christ's example of kingdom building through transformed hearts rather than political dominion theology or Christian nationalism.

In a world of competing political ideologies and religious movements, many Christians are asking: what is our true role in governance and society? This important question deserves a thorough biblical examination rather than quick political solutions.

The State of Governance in America

When we examine the religious makeup of our government, the statistics reveal a challenging reality:

  • In the US Senate: Only approximately 30% of senators profess to be born-again Christians
  • In the House of Representatives: About 33% might be considered evangelical Christians
  • Among the general population: Roughly 26.5% identify as born-again Christians

These numbers highlight a significant disconnect between biblical governance and our current political reality. This isn't about political parties but about individual souls needing Christ.

The Dangers of Kingdom Now Theology

A concerning trend gaining momentum in political-religious circles is what is known as "Dominion Theology" or "Kingdom Now Theology." This teaching suggests Christians must:

  1. Take control of the "Seven Mountains" of society (family, religion, education, media, entertainment, business, and government)
  2. Establish Christ's kingdom on earth through political power before His return

However, this ideology contradicts clear biblical teaching. Ephesians 2 reminds us that Satan remains "the prince of the power of the air" until Christ's return. We aren't called to seize political control but to proclaim the gospel that transforms individual lives.

"We're not taking back the Kingdom from Satan... because Jesus said that he is going to take back the Kingdom from Satan when he comes back at His second coming."

Jesus vs. Political Power

Consider Christ's entry into Jerusalem. He didn't arrive on a warhorse with military might but on a humble donkey. The people wanted a political Messiah who would overthrow Rome and "Make Israel Great Again," but Jesus wept over their misunderstanding.

The crowds chose Barabbas (a political revolutionary) over Jesus because they wanted rebellion against authority rather than inward spiritual transformation. Today, many Christians energetically support political movements but show little enthusiasm for evangelism and discipleship, which is true soul-care.

As 1 Corinthians 9:16 declares: "For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel."

Biblical Order in Leadership

Isaiah 3:12 presents a challenging perspective on leadership: "As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them." This passage suggests that God's intended order for leadership has been disrupted, resulting in societal problems.

However, the solution begins not in Washington but in our homes:

  1. For wives: "Submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord" (Colossians 3:18)
  2. For husbands: "Love your wives, and be not bitter against them" (Colossians 3:19)
  3. For children: "Obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord" (Colossians 3:20)

True Biblical Governance Starts at Home

Our national challenges reflect disorder in individual homes. Before seeking national revival, we must ensure:

  • The peace of God rules in our hearts (Colossians 3:15)
  • The word of Christ dwells in us richly (Colossians 3:16)
  • All we do honors the Lord Jesus (Colossians 3:17)
  • Families operate according to biblical order (Colossians 3:18-20)

The True Mission of the Born-Again Christian

As believers, we aren't called to dominate society through political means. Our commission remains:

  1. Preach the gospel to every creature
  2. Make disciples who follow Christ
  3. Order our own homes according to biblical principles
  4. Let transformed lives impact communities

True change in America will come not through political dominance but through a spiritual awakening—one heart, one home, and one community at a time. Let's focus on our primary mission of sharing Christ while modeling godly living in our families and communities.
