Answering "I'm a Good Person"
The Heart of Biblical Evangelism
It's absolutely reasonable that we serve the Lord - He's 100% worthy to be served! We should serve Him with a glad heart. Witnessing shouldn't be a burden, though dealing with people can be challenging. We should be happy to serve Him because He is worthy of our praise.
"I'm a Good Person" - The #1 Objection
The Response: Take them to two key passages - Ephesians 2 and Titus 3.
Ask: "Can I show you what the Bible says? Just one minute and two verses."
Ephesians 2:8-9
"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast."
Ask them: "According to God, do your good works save you?" The answer is NO. Why not? "Lest any man should boast." If salvation was by works, we'd boast our way into heaven.
Titus 3:5-7
"Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us... That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life."
Notice: We are saved according to His mercy. We are justified by His grace!
"If God is Loving, Why Does He send People to Hell?"
The Real Issue is: People hold the truth in unrighteousness.
Romans 1:18-20
"For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness... so that they are without excuse."
Don't allow lost people to put God on trial - let the Bible put them on trial. Why do people go to hell? Because they hold the truth in unrighteousness. Everyone knows there's a God, they just don't want to give God glory.
"God Will Forgive Me - He's Loving"
The Heart Problem is: You can't trust your feelings.
Key Verses:
- Jeremiah 17:9: "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?"
- Proverbs 14:12: "There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death."
God's Word doesn't care how you feel emotionally. Your heart is wicked - you need a payment for your sin.
"I Don't Have Time"
The Deception: Satan's greatest lie is that we have enough time.
Essential Verses:
- Isaiah 55:6: "Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near."
- Proverbs 27:1: "Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth."
- Luke 12:19-20: The rich fool who planned for many years, but God said, "Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee."
Better be careful - tomorrow might not come.
The Baptism Question - Acts 2:38
"Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins."
Key Point: Repentance is the key to remission. Baptism reflects what's already been done in your heart. Peter's saying: "You've repented, and your sins are remitted - now get baptized because of what's already happened."
Water doesn't save you - you get baptized because your sins have already been forgiven.
"I Go to Church"
The Example: Nicodemus was the greatest church member you could find.
John 3:1-3
Nicodemus was a Pharisee, ruler of the Jews, but Jesus told him: "Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."
Luke 5:31-32
"I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."
If you're trusting church membership for righteousness, God's looking for someone who says, "I'm a sinner, I'm not righteous."
The Bottom Line
Religion enslaves, but Jesus always saves. Traditions of men won't get you to heaven. Ye must be born again!
