An Unsaved Man Isn't in Your Church
Over a million people packed Jerusalem for the Feast of Tabernacles. They had built their booths, offered their sacrifices, and traveled hundreds of miles. They were still thirsty, and they didn't know it yet.
On the last day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, "If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink" (John 7:37). Come unto me. You can sit through every service on the calendar and still miss Him.
We'll say to a neighbor, "We're Pilgrim Baptist, we'd love to have you at our church." Nothing wrong with that, and nothing wrong with a Friday potluck. I've done both. But if a man isn't born again, he isn't in the church to begin with. All we've invited him to is a building.
What we ought to be asking is whether he knows the Savior. Jesus said come and drink. You can't make the water, and you don't have to dig the well. You open your mouth and receive it. Religious folks have a way of overthinking that. It's probably a lot easier to just do what Jesus said.
Invite them to the potluck if you like. But if that's all we ever invite them to, may God help us.
Don't stop at the building. Hear the full message from John 7 on the One who gives living water:
