A Pasture Will Tell on You

I keep sheep, and I know what happens to a pasture you graze hard and never rest. It goes thin. Nobody notices the first season, because the flock is still fat on what the ground stored up.

It happens to churches, too, and to homes. A pastor leans on the goodwill he built years ago and quits feeding the people. A husband coasts on what his wife fell for when they were young. The pews are still full and the house is still quiet, but nothing is going back into the ground.

Solomon wrote, “Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds” (Proverbs 27:23).

A pasture needs a season of rest now and then. Rest it on purpose, and tell your people why. Just don’t let it wear out and call it faithfulness.
